We have always had a first floor at Marlow House that has had a limited use for us. Access was only via a long staircase. It was basically a floor area with some storage rooms. Kitchen and toilet facilities did not exist. So after some extensive research and many, many funding applications we raised enough money to transform the room. A lift was installed, the kitchen and toilets created, including a disabled toilet. The hall itself had a new wooden floor, new lighting and a complete makeover.
The facility could now be used by us or for hire.
The lift was a major expense, but it means easy access to the function room, with wheelchair and walking frame clients no longer restricted to downstairs.
A £70k legacy contributed greatly to the cost of the first floor refurbishment. This came from a lovely lady called Mary, who was a staunch supporter of Marlow House, having been a volunteer, and in her much later years a day visitor.
Since the initial refurbishment, air conditioning has been added.
The function room is available for daytime and evening hire with very reasonable hire rates, especially for a regular booking. Regular users include Zumba, Keep Fit, Pilates and Kickboxing classes.
The room can be hired for private functions for parties, meetings and fundraising events. We have an excellent kitchen for catering, but do not have an alcohol licence, so private functions mean "Bring your own Bottle", which many users prefer to do.
